think I've talked myself into the cheaper Sigma 50-200mm lens, and a decent camera backpack.

*prods*

is this thing still on? Or are you all on Facebook/Twitter/somewhere else?

I'm still here! I just know 0 about cameras.

just checking - I know there are (or were) quite a few photography geeks on my friendslist, and they like nothing more than a good argument discussion about camera kit.

:-)

I was going to suggest that that's what you did. But I'm not really a camera geek. I do mean to dust off my old SLR (film) camera and remind myself why I like taking photos...

I just couldn't talk myself into continuing to look at the 18-200mm at twice the price. I want a new camera bag anyway...

Not quite qualified yet to weigh in on the lens question, but still here, and STILL WRITING GINORMOUS INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE REPORT THAT's DUE AT MIDNIGHT

Ooh, I'm learning about information architecture at work. or trying to...

Well? Did you notice the Firefly ships?
dakegra From: dakegra Date: December 17th, 2010 07:39 pm (UTC) (linky)
I did! Sorry it's taken a while to respond, stuff going on here, and work has been very busy.

Oh! I knew I meant to ask you something - I've got a book I think you'll like. If you want, email me an address and I'll get it in the post. Probably be in January, given how crazy the queues are this time of year. Been meaning to mention it for months!

Still here, but I'm having what is commonly termed a "fecking busy week" - not even had time to write any more of my Spain posts, let alone my "what I did at the weekend" or my birfday!

Anyway, the 50-200 is a fine lens, but iirc it has a fairly long minimum focus distance; it's not a portrait lens.

Busy week? You've had a crazy month!

I've played with the 50-200 lens - K's dad got one when he got his D60, so I know what I'd be getting. Portrait stuff I'd tend more towards my 50mm f/1.8 anyway.

Sigma lenses are good... I have two!

dakegra From: dakegra Date: December 16th, 2010 09:00 am (UTC) (linky)
which ones do you have?
ayoub From: ayoub Date: December 16th, 2010 09:05 am (UTC) (linky)
the 18-200 and the 35-300
dakegra From: dakegra Date: December 16th, 2010 09:06 am (UTC) (linky)
aha! What do you reckon to the 18-200?

It's my multi-purpose lens. I use it all the time!

I'm here, I just don't know enough about lenses to be able to comment
jugglebug From: jugglebug Date: December 16th, 2010 01:26 pm (UTC) (linky)
When I bought my lens it was essentially on the basis that them man told me "you want this one" And he had been recommended by someone who also knows.
I like my decisions easy like that :-)
