if I had to explain, you wouldn't understand

android update
my HTC Hero finally has the Android 2.1 update.

Holy moley, but it's good. The phone feels nice and zippy, and there are some UI enhancements which are nice.

But it's the apps that I was interested in. Kindle for Android, Google Maps, Google Goggles, etc.

Google Goggles is astonishing. Take a photo of a dvd, and it scans it, recognises what it is, and offers you shopping, imdb or the wikipedia page for the film.

Like... whoa.

google maps also now has turn-by-turn navigation! woo! free satnav!

Woo - I hadn't spotted the Google Maps enhancement. That's handy :-)

Found the nav a bit odd as on a couple of occasions I have outrun the stream leaving me driving through low res blur o vision

tried it on the way into work this morning, and it was pretty good. Wonder if you can change the voice...

I think I think may have had a few unneeded layers active. Assuming the satellite layer would cane the data

that's the podcast catcher, yes? I wondered about that and worried that it'd kill my data usage. I usually subscribe to podcasts in iTunes or Mediamonkey and dump them onto my iPod.

Ooh, unless you set it up to just download by wifi?

Yep, you can download only when conencted to wifi.
