I've just been over to help K's dad out with his new laptop. His old one died rather spectacularly, smoking gently (I kid you not) around the edges.

So, we fire it up and try to connect to his wireless network.

Nope. Vista isn't playing. Reckons there's no wireless hardware in the laptop.

We check the label on the box. Athlon, yadda yadda, RAM, blahblah, aha! W-LAN gizmo. Check.

We check the laptop. yup, got the right stickers on, little switchy thing to turn it on and off.

We amuse ourselves for several minutes turning the wireless switchy thing on and off.

Still nothing. Vista denies there's any sort of wireless doohicky.

ok. We (and you know I mean *I* at this point, don't you?) retrieve the USB wifi doohicky from K's mum's PC. Plug it in.

installing hardware. ack! no driver. WOE, says Vista.

AHA! we reply. We have DISKS.

We show the disks to Vista. Vista cries, and installs the drivers.

Vista then *insists* that the drivers we installed were crap, and that the USB wifi doohicky WILL NOT WORK. BWAAHAHAHAHA.

It then further amuses itself by telling us to connect to the internets to get a VISTA driver, fool.

It then launches IE (*spit*) and takes us to the Netgear site to download... the... driver.

For the USB wifi thing which it INSISTS doesn't work without a Vista driver.

We point out that this should, according to YOU, Vista, be impossible.

OHSHIT, sez Vista, and cries.

HAHA! we say. We click on various things, and Vista then says "Oh, you mean *this* internal wifi doohicky?"

We nod, and point out that mere moments ago, Vista insisted there was NO internal wifi doohicky, hence the poncing around with the USB one.

Vista, I *swear* on a stack of notes *this* high, giggles.

We threaten to return it to the shop.

Vista shrugs. "meh," it replies, installs the driver for the non-existent INTERNAL wifi thing and all is good.

So, dear reader. WHO ON EARTH SELLS A LAPTOP WITH WIFI BUT WITHOUT THE DRIVERS TO USE THE WIFI OUT OF THE BOX?

still, kept me amused for an hour. And I got a blog post out of it.

Lord knows, I need stuff to write about, eh?
