I've finally persuaded K that we need to upgrade the laptop. The old one is unreliable, and takes up a huge amount of space on the desk as we have it linked up to a second monitor (don't use the laptop screen at all, and there are wires and stuff everywhere.

So, dear reader. I reckon my budget is around the £300 mark. Don't need anything too fancy, but I'd like to be able to play games on it, do photography editing, and so on.

Not cutting edge games, but being able to play WoW or EVE at a decent resolution would be nice.

Should I go for something like this from PC World (Acer Aspire X3200, 2GB RAM, 160GB HD), or should I consider the home build route?

No idea how much it cost, but I have an fujitsu siemens laptop bought from eBuyer. Also no idea of spec, but it all works fine so far, though if you watch a DVD, it's better with headphones as the volume isn't very loud.

So, not laptop... desktop.

If you up it by £100, you can get a reasonable amount of kit for that from Scan. Or grab one of their barebones systems (check todayonly) and fill in the gaps.

sorry, yes. Upgrade from laptop *to* desktop.

:-)

the array of various motherboards and processors is somewhat bewildering.

Acer like to put helpful software on their laptops that prevent them overheating. This is because they skimp on stuff like *fans*. Said software slows your laptop right down! Trust me, I know this from two lappies!

eBuyer are a good place to look for whatever you're looking for. Once you know what you weant. Give it another couple of weeks and lappy prices will coime down because traders are getting scared of getting stuck with stock over Christmas.

I got mine on eBid for less than Amazon were selling them for :)
